Free Wi-Fi at Egypt's Airports: Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm

Cairo airport has free Wi-Fi, announced by Orange Egypt in January 2025. For Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor and Marsa Alam we found no official page, only traveller reports. What is confirmed airport by airport, why airport Wi-Fi does not solve the first hour, and what to do instead.

Short answer: yes at Cairo. In January 2025 Orange Egypt announced free Wi-Fi for arriving and departing passengers at Cairo International Airport, with Wi-Fi kiosks in all terminals. For the other airports tourists use, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor, Marsa Alam and the new Sphinx airport, we found no page from the airport operator that states whether Wi-Fi is free, how long it lasts or how you log in. A traveller guide for Sharm el-Sheikh reports 15 free minutes and an access code sent to an Egyptian phone number. Whatever the airport, Wi-Fi stops at the terminal door, and that is where you need data most.

We read each source on 19 October 2026. "Not confirmed" does not mean there is no Wi-Fi: it means we did not find a page from the airport or its operator that says so, and we will not repeat what we could not check. Terms at airports change, and a forum post from a few years ago is not proof of what you will find today.

Cairo International Airport

Cairo is the one airport with an official announcement. On 25 January 2025, Orange Egypt published a press release about a partnership with the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (EHCAAN). In its words, Orange "has introduced free Wi-Fi to incoming and departing passengers at Cairo International Airport" as the initial phase of that partnership, and installed "Wi-Fi kiosks in all terminals to indicate the service availability", with a support team on site. The same release mentions free charging stations for phones and interactive screens showing gates and flight details.

What the release does not say: the name of the network, how long a session lasts, and how you sign in. At Sharm el-Sheikh, a traveller reports a code sent by text message (see below); whether Cairo works the same way, and whether a foreign number receives the code, we have not checked. If you rely on it, look for the Orange kiosk in your terminal and ask the staff there.

For the rest of your arrival (terminals, transfers, the order to do things in), read our Cairo airport arrival guide.

Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor and Marsa Alam

These are the airports most holidaymakers land at, and the ones with the least written information. For Sharm el-Sheikh, the traveller site Sleeping in Airports writes that "Free WiFi is available for 15-minutes", and quotes a reader for whom "you need an Egyptian mobile phone to receive an access code". The same page also says it "cannot confirm if it's free or paid", and its guide was last updated in January 2024. We quote it because it is the only account we found, not because we can vouch for it.

For Hurghada, Luxor, Marsa Alam and Sphinx we found nothing from the operators. If you are flying into one of them, plan as if there were no Wi-Fi you can use. That is the safe assumption, and it costs you nothing if you turn out to be wrong.

Why airport Wi-Fi does not solve the first hour

Even where it is free and works, airport Wi-Fi covers the part of the journey where you need the internet least. You need it most just after:

There is also a security point. On any shared network, at an airport, a hotel or a café, the people around you use the same network. Banking apps encrypt their own traffic, but this is not the place to type passwords into a website that does not show the padlock.

The alternative: land with data already working

An eSIM is installed before you leave home and connects on landing. With ours, you buy the plan on this site, receive a QR code by e-mail and scan it on your own Wi-Fi a day or two before the flight. The plan does not start then: it starts at the first connection in Egypt, so installing early costs you nothing. When the plane lands, switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for that line only, and the phone connects to Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt or e& Egypt as soon as it finds one of their networks.

Our prices, read on our own plans page on 19 October 2026: €6.50 for 1 day, €33.00 for 7 days, €46.00 for 15 days, €86.00 for 30 days. Every plan has unlimited data: about 1 GB a day at full 4G speed, then 512 Kbps until the next day, enough for messages, maps and e-mail. It is data only, with no Egyptian number: your usual SIM keeps your number for calls and texts. Other sellers' prices are compared in our comparison of seven Egypt eSIMs; we are not the cheapest at every length.

If you did not install anything before the flight, the airport Wi-Fi at Cairo is exactly what you need to do it: buy, receive the QR code, scan it. That is the one job airport Wi-Fi does well. The SIM counters in the arrivals hall are the other option; we compared them in Cairo airport SIM kiosks or eSIM and Hurghada and Sharm airports: SIM card or eSIM.

A short checklist for arrival

  1. At home: check that your phone accepts an eSIM and is unlocked (check your model), then install the eSIM on Wi-Fi.
  2. On the plane: keep data roaming off on your usual SIM, so it does not use your home operator's rates in Egypt.
  3. On landing: switch on the eSIM line and its data roaming. The order of the settings is in phone settings on landing in Cairo.
  4. If it does not connect: restart the phone, then choose a network by hand. The steps are in eSIM not working in Egypt.

Once at the hotel, its Wi-Fi may or may not be good; we explain why in hotel Wi-Fi in Egypt. If you want data from the runway to the hotel room, our plans are here, from 1 to 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there free Wi-Fi at Cairo airport?

Yes. In January 2025 Orange Egypt announced free Wi-Fi for arriving and departing passengers at Cairo International Airport, with Wi-Fi kiosks in all terminals. The announcement does not give the network name, the session length or the login method.

Is there free Wi-Fi at Hurghada airport?

We found no page from the airport operator that says so, so we cannot confirm it. Plan as if there were no Wi-Fi you can use, and install an eSIM before the flight.

Is there free Wi-Fi at Sharm el-Sheikh airport?

A traveller guide, Sleeping in Airports, last updated in January 2024, reports 15 free minutes and quotes a reader who needed an Egyptian phone number to receive the access code. We found no official page to confirm it.

Can I install an eSIM using the airport Wi-Fi?

Yes, if the airport Wi-Fi works for you. Installing an eSIM needs an internet connection. It is simpler to install it at home a day or two before the flight: with eSIM Égypte the plan only starts at the first connection in Egypt.

Do I need data as soon as I land in Egypt?

Usually yes: to find your driver, message your hotel or open a ride-hailing app. Airport Wi-Fi stops at the terminal door, so a plan already installed on your phone is the reliable way.
