Egypt is outside the EU roaming zone

"Roam like at home" stops at the edge of the European Economic Area. Egypt is outside it — and the bill can be a shock.

It is the most common assumption before a trip to Egypt: that the plan which works in Lisbon or Athens will work the same way in Cairo.

The basic fact

The European "roam like at home" rules cover the European Union and the European Economic Area. Egypt is not in either. Your included data allowance therefore does not apply there: you fall onto your operator's out-of-zone rates, billed separately.

That much does not change from year to year. Each operator's out-of-zone rate does change, which is exactly why we do not quote one here. Yours is the only figure that matters.

Check your rate in two minutes

Three routes, most reliable first:

Your operator's app — look for "international", "abroad", "outside the zone" or "destinations". It is the most current source and it reflects your specific plan.
Your online account — same section. Search explicitly for "Egypt" rather than reading a generic tariff zone.
Customer service — the exact question to ask: "What is my data rate in Egypt, and do I have a spending cap?"

Look for three things: the price per megabyte or gigabyte, whether an optional travel pass exists that must be activated before departure, and above all whether there is a spending cap. Many European operators apply a default cap and send a warning text, but do not assume yours does — confirm it.

What to do on landing, if in doubt

If you did not check before flying, the rule is simple: turn data roaming off on your usual line as soon as you land, before you even leave the aircraft. You keep receiving calls and texts, with no risk of data charges.
