Short answer: yes, an iPhone works with an Egypt eSIM. Apple's requirement is an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or any later model. Two things can still stop it: an iPhone locked to the operator that sold it, and some iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao. Both are checked in a minute in Settings, before you pay. Once the eSIM is installed, six settings decide whether it works on arrival, and one of them, Data Roaming, is behind most "no Internet" messages.
iPhone models that take an Egypt eSIM
| Model | eSIM | Note |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 and newer | Yes | Covered by Apple's requirement: an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later |
| iPhone 16, 15 and 14 (all versions) | Yes | Models sold in the USA have no SIM tray: eSIM only |
| iPhone 13 (all versions) | Yes | Two eSIMs can be active at the same time |
| iPhone 12 and 11 (all versions) | Yes | One physical SIM and one eSIM |
| iPhone SE 2020 and 2022 | Yes | One physical SIM and one eSIM |
| iPhone XS, XS Max, XR | Yes | The first iPhones with eSIM (2018) |
| iPhone X, 8, 7 and older | No | No eSIM |
This is the list on our compatibility page, extended with Apple's own wording: "an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later". Cellular iPads from 2018 and 2019 onwards take an eSIM as well. If you travel with an Android phone too, the models to check are in Egypt eSIM on Samsung and Pixel.
The fastest check on the phone itself: open Settings, General, About, and scroll to the bottom. An iPhone with eSIM shows two IMEI numbers, one of them for the digital SIM.
Two checks before you buy
1. Is the iPhone unlocked?
Open Settings, then General, then About, and read the Carrier Lock line. Apple's page says: if "No SIM restrictions" appears next to Carrier Lock, the iPhone is unlocked. An unlocked iPhone accepts the eSIM of any operator or travel eSIM seller.
If the line names a lock, the phone will refuse a travel eSIM, ours or anyone else's. Apple is clear on who can fix it: "Only your carrier can unlock your iPhone", and it "might take the carrier a few days". So ask before the trip, not at the airport. This matters for your money too: under our terms a plan is not refunded for an incompatible or operator-locked phone.
2. Where was the iPhone bought?
Apple's travel page, updated on 17 September 2026, states that in mainland China only iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM, and that in Hong Kong and Macao certain iPhone models have two nano-SIM slots instead. If your iPhone comes from one of those markets, use the two-IMEI check above before you buy anything.
The opposite case exists as well. iPhone 14 and later sold in the United States have no SIM tray at all. For those phones a plastic tourist SIM card from a kiosk at Cairo airport is not an option: it has to be an eSIM, either a travel eSIM bought online or an eSIM issued by an Egyptian operator's shop.
Installing an Egypt eSIM on an iPhone
- Stay on Wi-Fi. Apple lists it under "What you need": the iPhone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network or a hotspot, because the eSIM profile is downloaded from the Internet. Install at home, not in the arrivals hall.
- Put the QR code on another screen. With us it is shown on the confirmation page and sent by e-mail. Open the e-mail on a laptop or a second phone, or print it.
- On the iPhone: Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Data on some iPhones), then Add eSIM, then Use QR Code. Point the camera at the code and follow the screens.
- Label the line. Apple suggests labelling each plan; call this one "Egypt" so you recognise it in the settings.
- No camera available? Choose Enter Details Manually at the bottom of the screen and type the SM-DP+ address and the activation code from the same e-mail.
Menu names move a little between iOS versions; older versions say Add Cellular Plan where newer ones say Add eSIM. The full walk-through with screenshots of each path is in how to install an eSIM for Egypt, step by step.
Installing does not start the plan. Ours starts at the first connection to an Egyptian network, so an eSIM installed three days before the flight has lost nothing when you land. Keep the eSIM line switched off at home if you prefer; you turn it on at the gate in Cairo, Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh.
The six settings to use in Egypt
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cellular Data (Mobile Data) | The Egypt line | This is the line that carries your Internet traffic |
| Data Roaming, on the Egypt line | On | A travel eSIM works in roaming by design. Off means no data at all |
| Data Roaming, on your usual line | Off | Your number still rings and receives texts, but it cannot use paid data |
| Allow Cellular Data Switching | Off | Stops the iPhone from falling back on your usual line for data |
| Default Voice Line | Your usual line | Our eSIM is data only: it has no number to call from |
| Low Data Mode, on the Egypt line | Your choice | Useful: it holds back background updates and saves the daily full-speed data |
All six are in Settings, Cellular. Tap the Egypt line to reach its own Data Roaming and Low Data Mode switches; the choice of the data line and the Cellular Data Switching option are on the Cellular Data screen.
The one that matters most is Data Roaming on the Egypt line. Our supplier's help centre names a switched-off Data Roaming as the most likely cause when an installed eSIM shows signal bars but loads nothing. It feels wrong to turn roaming on abroad, because on your home line that switch costs money. On a prepaid travel eSIM it costs nothing beyond the plan you already paid.
The access point (APN) is set automatically. If you are ever asked for it, the value is data.esim, with the user name and password left empty.
What iOS 26 changes on arrival
Apple describes a new behaviour for iOS 26 and later. When you land with a travel eSIM already installed, the iPhone may show a notification, Turn On Travel eSIM. You tap it, then choose between "Travel eSIM Only" and "Travel eSIM and Current eSIM". If you keep both lines, Apple says the travel eSIM is used for data, and warns that "you might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM". The iPhone then offers Low Data Mode.
Our advice is to keep both lines, so your usual number still receives calls and bank codes by text, and to check afterwards that Data Roaming is off on your usual line. Apple adds that if you use the travel eSIM alone, FaceTime and iMessage keep working on your home number.
On the way back, the same page says the iPhone turns the travel eSIM off and your home line back on when you return, depending on the country. If that does not happen, do it by hand in Settings, Cellular.
Dual SIM: your number stays reachable
An Egypt eSIM does not replace your usual SIM. It sits next to it. Apple's Dual SIM page says every eSIM iPhone can run one physical SIM and one eSIM, and that iPhone 13 models and later can also run two eSIMs at once. That second case is the one that helps if your usual line is already an eSIM, which is the norm on American iPhones.
Apple also notes that an iPhone can store eight or more eSIMs. You do not have to delete anything to add an Egypt eSIM, and you should not delete your usual line to "make room". More on the two-line setup in Dual SIM in Egypt.
Hotspot, 5G and calls on an iPhone in Egypt
Personal Hotspot. Sharing is included on all our plans, and the shared data comes out of the same daily full-speed data. On older iOS versions our supplier notes that the hotspot may need the APN data.esim typed into the Personal Hotspot field as well. Details in tethering in Egypt.
5G. Egypt's operators launched commercial 5G in June 2025 and a recent iPhone can use it. Our supplier's catalogue does not state 5G for our plans, so we sell them as 4G LTE and promise nothing more. If the status bar shows 4G or LTE, nothing is broken.
FaceTime and WhatsApp calls. Messages, maps, e-mail and browsing work normally. Voice and video calls over apps are a separate question in Egypt, whatever the phone and whatever the eSIM. We set out what is documented in does WhatsApp calling work in Egypt.
If the iPhone shows no data in Egypt
- Settings, Cellular: is the Egypt line turned on, and is it the line chosen for Cellular Data?
- Tap the Egypt line: is Data Roaming on?
- Turn Airplane Mode on for ten seconds, then off, so the iPhone searches for a network again.
- Still nothing: tap Network Selection on the Egypt line, turn Automatic off, and pick another of our three networks, Vodafone, Orange or e&.
- Restart the iPhone.
Do not delete the eSIM while trying things. Our supplier's help says a removed eSIM can normally be installed again, but it also lists reinstalling as a cause of installation errors, and you would need Wi-Fi to do it. The full list of fixes, and a same-day backup plan, is in eSIM not working in Egypt.
Which plan for an iPhone
The phone changes nothing; the number of days decides. Our plans are unlimited data on Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt, with about 1 GB a day at full 4G LTE speed and 512 Kbps after that, from €6.50 for 1 day and €33.00 for 7 days to €86.00 for 30 days. There is no app to install and no account to create: the QR code goes straight into the iPhone's own settings. See the plans.
If you want more full-speed data per day, or the lowest price for a given duration, other sellers do better than us on some durations, and we say which in our dated comparison. All of them install on an iPhone the same way, with a QR code or through their app.
