Short answer: an eSIM Égypte plan cannot receive SMS. It carries mobile data only — it does not come with an Egyptian phone number, so there is no number for a bank or an app to text.
That sounds like a problem for verification codes, but in practice it is not, and the fix is simpler than it looks.
How verification codes actually reach you
Your verification SMS goes to your existing number — the one on your home SIM. On a dual-SIM phone you keep that SIM active for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data. Your codes arrive exactly as they do at home.
Receiving an SMS on your home number while abroad is normally free or very cheap even without a roaming package, because you are only receiving. Check your operator's terms before you travel.
What to do if your phone has no room for both
- Single-SIM phone: keep the physical SIM in and use the eSIM for data — that is the whole point of the dual setup.
- Before you fly: switch accounts that support it to an authenticator app or email codes, which travel over data and need no SMS at all.
- WhatsApp: already verified on your existing number, so it keeps working over the eSIM's data without a new code.

Do you need an Egyptian number at all?
For most travellers, no. Maps, WhatsApp, Signal, ride-hailing and booking apps all run on data. An Egyptian number is only worth arranging if you specifically need to receive local SMS — for example a local bank — and that requires a local operator's SIM bought in Egypt with your passport.
