Short answer: a VPN app works over our Egypt eSIM as it does over any data connection, and it is useful for one thing in particular: protecting what you send over a hotel or café Wi-Fi network. We do not recommend a VPN as a way to get round Egypt's restrictions on voice and video calls over apps. We cannot tell you that it works, we cannot tell you that it is allowed, and an earlier version of this page was wrong to present it as the solution.
What is restricted in Egypt
Messages, maps, e-mail, social media and browsing work normally in Egypt. Voice and video calls over apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime are a different matter: the country has restricted internet calling for years, and a call may connect, drop or fail depending on the network and the day. What a VPN is useful for
- Shared Wi-Fi. On a hotel, airport or café network, a VPN encrypts the traffic between your phone and the VPN's server. That is its main purpose for a traveller.
- Your employer's network. If your company requires its own VPN to reach its systems, it runs over the eSIM's data like any other app.
On mobile data you are not sharing a local network with strangers, so the first reason matters less on an eSIM than on Wi-Fi.
What a VPN does not change
- Your daily data. Traffic through a VPN counts in the same daily allowance: about 1 GB a day at full 4G LTE speed with us, then 512 Kbps. A VPN adds a little overhead and can only make a slow connection slower.
- Coverage. Where there is no signal, a VPN changes nothing.
- The rules of the country you are in. We are not in a position to tell you whether using a VPN to reach a restricted service is permitted in Egypt, and we do not advise it. If a call matters, make an ordinary call from your home SIM, at your operator's rate for Egypt.
If the eSIM stops working with a VPN on
A VPN is a frequent cause of "connected but nothing loads". If that happens, turn the VPN off, check that data roaming is on for the eSIM line, and try again. The other checks are in eSIM not working in Egypt.
