Egypt eSIM for a 24-hour stopover: what to buy

A day in Cairo between two flights: the connection has to be sorted before you take off, not on arrival.

A long layover in Cairo is one of the few cases where the connection has to work immediately. You do not have the slack to find a kiosk, queue and hand over your passport: you have a window, and you need to get out of the airport.

The 1-day plan

For a stopover, the 1-day plan at €6.50 is enough. It is the shortest duration we sell, and it covers exactly this case: arrive, move around, come back.

The important part: validity starts on the first connection to an Egyptian network, not at purchase. You can buy and install the eSIM the day before, at home, without losing an hour of the plan. See the durations.

Before you fly

On landing

Turn the eSIM line on and let the phone find the network. It connects to the best available signal across Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt. That is the moment the 24-hour clock starts.

Turn data roaming off on your usual line if you do not know its out-of-zone rate: Egypt is not part of the EU roaming zone.

What fits in a day

You get about 1 GB at full speed, then 512 Kbps for the rest of the 24 hours. For a stopover that is plenty: Google Maps to reach the pyramids, Uber or Careem for the rides, WhatsApp to let people know, and your boarding pass on the way back. All of that keeps working after the first gigabyte — it is HD video that stops.

What the plan does not do

It is data only: no Egyptian number, no normal calls, no texts. Your calls go through your usual line or through WhatsApp. For a stopover that is rarely a problem — but it is worth knowing in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 1-day plan start when I buy it?

No. It starts on the first connection to an Egyptian network. You can buy and install it the day before without losing any hours.

Can I install the eSIM at Cairo airport?

Installing needs an internet connection, so you would need airport Wi-Fi. It is possible, but it is far simpler to install the QR code at home before you fly: activating on arrival then takes seconds.

Will I get an Egyptian number for the day?

No. This is a data-only plan: no Egyptian number, no normal calls and no texts. Calls go through your usual line or apps like WhatsApp.

Is 1 GB enough for a stopover?

For a day with Maps, a ride-hailing app and WhatsApp, comfortably. And past roughly 1 GB the connection continues at 512 Kbps until the 24 hours are up, without being cut off.
